Oak Galls for Ink and Mordant Making

Oak Galls for Ink and Mordant Making

£9.00Price

The knopper oak gall is the best for ink making (in our humble opinion). Oak gall ink itself is divine. As black as the night or a golden brown, depending on whether or not you add iron. Its legendary status is elevated by the fact that it was used to write the Magna Carter and Pride and Prejudice...what will you write?

We hear that there was a shortage of oak galls in some areas last autumn. So, it seems only right that we share the veritable bounty that we are experienced in Worcestershire. This years supplies do not look as promising though, so get them while we still have some left.

We always gather our galls with nature in mind. We always leave at least 50% for the local inhabitants, be they furry feathered or much smaller in size.

There are many excellent recipes for oak gall ink on the internet. Many recommend a ratio of 10g of galls to about 100ml of water. So, even after reduction, there are plenty of galls in our smallest bundles to keep you in beautiful homemade ink for quite some time.

We are selling them in two sizes and with the option of being whole or ground. I would love to say that I ground them by hand but they are hard little devils so I resorted to our spice grinder.

The whole galls are packaged in newspaper/ recycled brown paper or cardboard boxes to keep our use of plastics low.  For practicality sake, we have opted for cellophane pouches for the powder... it kept escaping from the paper.

We have lots of lovely inks (including oak gall and mighty acorn), stationery and naturally dyed fabric in our shop. Don’t forget to have a look.

Please remember postage is free when you compare our prices to other people. For further comparison, it is worth considering that 80g is around 40 oak galls (although this does vary depending on their size).

Happy shopping.
